Vintage Westinghouse HP 90-1 Percolator

Westinghouse Pressure Flo Automatic percolator

Westinghouse Pressure Flo Automatic percolator

The Westinghouse Pressure Flo Automatic percolator is a vintage coffee pot. This is a model HP 90-1 that has an etching of a Bald Eagle on one side. Great for also making hot water to be used for soups, instant coffee, teas, hot chocolate, or anything you need hot water for. Has a "Pot Belly" shaped coffee pot that is constructed of stainless steel making it very durable and made to last for a long time, unlike some of the modern percolators you find on the market today. This model measures eleven inches tall with a six inch diameter excluding the handle. Pot has measuring lines located on the inside and the outside of the pot. Below the handle is a brew selection dial with a slide lever for selecting brewing strengths from mild to strong. When the brewing is finished a red light turns on that is located above the brew selection dial. The handle is constructed of wood as is the knob on the top of the unit. Inside and outside of the filter basket are measuring lines also. The power cord is detachable and has a protective spring coil. This is a 120 volt percolator with 750 watts of brewing power. The percolator was manufactured by Westinghouse in Manfield, Ohio. Even though this is a rare item, it is sometimes found on auction sites such as Craigslist or ebay.

Upside down brew basket NEW
by: I Love my HP 90-1

I have one of these pots and I love the dark rich coffee I get from it!!! The brew basket is upside down when you use it. You have to fill the basket and then screw the "lid" onto it with the stand pipe above the basket. Now make sure the lid is tight and invert the basket and pipe into your pot of water. Here are a couple suggestions for your success... Start with VERY cold water to extend your brew time which will give you a darker and richer brew. Also, run a little water through the stand pipe and on the inside of the basket "lid" before screwing it onto the basket of fresh grounds; this helps keep the dry grounds in the inverted basket until brewing starts. I wish you much success and great coffee!!!

Westinghouse Pressure-Flo HP90-1 coffee pot

You described the coffee pot perfectly, but did not say how to use it. The basket inside looks to be upside down and screws on to the stem. I would like to try the one I found, but do not know how - do I use a filter? And if yes, how would I go about doing it?

Thanks for any help you can give me

Usually a percolator doesn't have to have a paper filter, as the basket is the filter. However, many coffee drinkers want to make sure that coffee grounds are not in the coffee, so they use paper filters as a way of keeping smaller grounds from getting into the coffee. So, it is up to the individual if they want to use or not use a paper filter.

As for the basket being upside down, could it be that it is screwed on wrong? Have you tried unscrewing it, and turning it around? Without seeing myself, I am only guessing. But it would seem logical to be right side up so the grounds stay in the basket.
