Teapot with Enamel Peeling Problem

by Andrea Perry

Question:

Hi, I own a Old Dutch International Cast Iron Felicity teapot currently. I need a second teapot but before I buy another, I have a question. The one I currently have has enamel peeling off the inside, especially the spout. I only brew herbal teas in it and rinse with water and occasionally soap. I am concerned about using it now as well as buying another of the same brand. Is this a common problem? can it be fixed? I really like the style, size, and shape of this teapot so if it is a fluke I'd like another one.

Thanks!
Andrea

Answer:
Not sure if there is anyway to fix this problem. Also, no, this is not a common problem. Enamel coated cast iron teapots generally do not peel. Often, manufacturers will replace cast iron teapots as long as they have not been abused by cleaning with rough materials, etc. You could contact the manufacturer about replacement. As for buying another one, the peeling problem is probably an isolated problem and should not happen with other teapots you may purchase.

Perhaps the enamel peeling problem is more common than you'd think. I'm having the same thing happen with mine.

My cast iron teapot is also starting to flake, especially around the spout. I have had the teapot for four years and have used it almost everyday. Now I'm afraid to use it because I'm worried about ingesting the black flakes. Anyone know if this would be harmful?
