There are a number of conflicting claims about the origin of Long Island Ice Tea, with the majority of votes directed towards the Town of Babylon in New York. The title of the beverage is the most deceiving factor since tea in the most saturated form is not an ingredient, and is only mentioned because Long Island Iced Tea plays close resemblance to traditional lemon iced tea.

There many variations of Long Island Iced Tea outside of the United States, with them being less of a sour blend and composed with orange juice or cola exclusively. In its birthplace, Long Island Iced Tea contains a high concentration of alcohol around 22%, which is made possible my several types of liquors being added to the mix. Long Island Iced tea is one of the most renown beverages to be featured on the big screen, which includes Cruel Intentions, Sex in the City and The Simpsons, and although it may look innocently tempting, packs a major wallop.

Traditional ingredients in Long Island Iced Tea include tequila, gin, vodka, rum, all topped with cola and garnished with lemon. Although we can’t change much of the alcoholic ingredients, there are however different recipes for it, and the ones listed below are some of the most popular.


Long Island Iced Tea Recipe #1

    Ingredients:
  • 1 ounce white tequila
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1 ounce white rum
  • Half triple Sec
  • 1 ounce gin
  • Half cup cola
  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 lemon slices, for taste
  • ½ cup cola

    Directions:
    Pour the rum, gin, tequila, vodka, triple sec and lemon juice into a shaker full of ice. Combine the ingredients well and pour into 2 glasses, and top it off with cola. Top it off with lemon slices and serve chilled.


    Long Island Iced Tea Recipe #2

      Ingredients:
    • 1 cup cola (chilled)
    • ¼ cup water
    • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
    • 1/3 cup tequila
    • ¼ cup Cointreau liqueur
    • 1/3 cup vodka (chilled)
    • 1/3 cup gin
    • ¼ cup water
    • 1/3 cup white rum
    • 4 cups ice cubes

      Directions:
      In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water and cook for 2 minutes over low heat, and until the sugar dissolves. Bring the sugar syrup to a boil and leave for 3 minutes without stirring or until the syrup gets thick. Set aside for 20 minutes to cool, and prepare the glasses with the ice. Pour the gin, sugar syrup, cola, rum, tequila, lemon juice, vodka and Cointreau liqueur over the ice and serve immediately. Long Island Iced tea makes a great drink for hot summer days, and the above mentioned recipes are just few of the many you will definitely love sipping on.
