    Kona Peaberry Coffee Information

This coffee gets its name from the region where it grows and because of the distinctiveness of its coffee bean. The big island of Hawaii is home to the Kona region, which is a small crescent shaped area on the western side of the island. Only coffee that is grown and cultivated in this area can be referred to as Kona coffee and not any coffee grown in any other part of the world.

The Kona coffee cherry, like most coffee cherries, contains two coffee beans. But with Kona coffee, sometimes one particular side of the flower blends with the other side as a result of a random act of nature. This fusion results in only one coffee bean being present inside the cherry as opposed to two. Coffee that is made from such single bean cherries is known as Kona Peaberry Coffee.

The Unique Taste of Kona Peaberry

Coffee trees require optimum conditions to grow and flourish in. The Kona region is home to the Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes, on the slopes of which the coffee is grown. The climate is cool and dry in the winters, whereas there is adequate cloud cover in the summers. These weather conditions are perfect for coffee cultivation; and coupled with the richness of the volcanic soil, it is no surprise that the Kona region yields the finest coffee beans in the world.

These Kona coffee beans are further classified into different types depending on the shape and size of the coffee bean. At the top of the list comes Kona Peaberry, which is followed by Kona Fancy, Kona Number 1, and Kona Prime.

    Harvesting and Processing Kona Peaberry

When the kona cherry ripens, it turns bright red in color and this is when it is hand picked off the trees. After being picked, the coffee cherry is pulped, fermented, and completely dried. During this stage in the processing, the coffee cherry contains a hard outer layer which protects the mature beans inside. This layer is removed by milling, thus uncovering the tasty green beans nestled inside the cherry.

At this stage, the cherries are classified as regular kona (with two beans) and peaberry kona (the ones with the single bean). In a full harvest, Kona Peaberry Coffee often accounts for only 4%-5% of the total coffee harvested, which is why it is quite an expensive coffee.

The green beans can be purchased and stored in this state for several years. But if you want the coffee ready for use, then you need to buy the roasted variety. The process of roasting brings out the flavors of the bean, which when used as coffee gives you that perfect cup to start your day.

    Buying Kona Peaberry

When buying Kona Peaberry Coffee, whether on the internet or off, make sure that you read the label properly. Buy only that coffee which is labeled as 100% Pure Kona Peaberry Coffee and not an inferior product such as the Kona peaberry blend. A blend contains only about 10%-15% peaberry coffee, whereas the rest is made up of regular coffee.

Also make sure to buy from a maker who roasts the coffee beans everyday and also ships on a daily basis. This ensures that you get the freshest Kona Peaberry possible.
