Green Mountain Coffee Roasters started out as a cafe in Vermont in 1981. Eventually other restaurants and inns in the area started asking for their equipment and coffees. Because of this they expanded into the wholesale market. Then skiers who had visited these restaurants and inns and had tasted the coffee started asking if they could have it shipped to their homes. Thus started the mailorder side of the business. They got so big that in 1993 they went public and started selling stock on NASDAQ. Currently they have over 7,000 customers, the majority being wholesale accounts, plus the mailorder retail accounts.
